Who’s Under The Hood
Alison Alvarez is the CEO and co-founder of BlastPoint. She spent years building big data tools for large companies, and became convinced that more affordable and accessible solutions should exist. She has emerged as an expert consultant regarding large geospatial data systems, lecturing around the country to teach people how to use data tools for themselves, and developing a library of free interactive coding lessons (https://github.com/nosila/).
Alison is an NSF Research Fellow, a Jack Kent Cooke Fellow, and a Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellow. She holds two Master’s degrees from Carnegie Mellon: a 2007 MS from the Language Technologies Institute at the School of Computer Science and a 2016 MBA from the Tepper School of Business. She currently sits on the advisory board of Y-Combinator’s Valor Water where she utilizes her extensive experience to guide tech infrastructure and software team-building.
Tomer Borenstein is the CTO and co-founder of BlastPoint, focused on bringing the power of data to the masses. Tomer graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a Bachelor’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering, followed by a Master’s degree focused on Machine Learning and Computer Vision. He was the first CMU undergraduate to create and instruct an official Computer Science course: “Building Cross Platform Web Applications”. Tomer is the grand prize winner of the UpPrize Social Innovation Competition, and has been recently named to Pittsburgh Business Times’ “30 Under 30” list.
Jeremy Shafton is the Sales & Marketing Director of BlastPoint. Jeremy graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2009; by then already working on his second startup. In 2008, Jeremy launched The Gadgeteers: a six-figure E-Commerce business he managed as a solo operation. In 2009, he co-founded Door 6, an ambitious attempt to develop 3D, cross-platform, multiplayer, mobile games. From 2010 to 2017, Jeremy was the leading Sales Executive at SupraNet, a Managed Service Provider.
